About the Author

It was as a graduate intern at a Sacramento CBS-affiliate television station that Joan became involved in the story that would ultimately form the basis for her full-length work of nonfiction, Little Girl Lost: A True Story of Shattered Innocence & Murder, first published in 1992. The book sold over 250,000 copies worldwide.Over the years, she has authored a number of feature articles, commentaries, profiles, and columns which have appeared in dozens of national and regional magazines and newspapers. Among them are AARP Magazine, Sacramento Magazine, Sierra Heritage, the Sacramento Bee, and Vidura: The Press Institute of India Mass Media Magazine.Joan has been the recipient of awards from the Society of Professional Journalists as well as Writer's Digest magazine for her article on a one-time homophobic father's efforts to deal with his gay son's emergence from the closet and diagnosis of--and eventual death from--AIDS, and how that father went on to become an AIDS activist. My newest novel in the Tess Alexander Mystery series, "A Cruel Oblivion," has just been awarded the 2022 Eric Hoffer Book Award in the E-Book category, and was also a finalist for the Grand Prize. The Hoffer Award has become one of the largest international book awards for small, academic, independent presses, and self-published works.

My first book in the series, "A Just Reckoning," was a Finalist in the 2021 Alliance of Independent Authors Annual Book Award.

Now, let me introduce myself. As you can see from my photo, I love dogs.

Golden Retrievers especially.

The dog in the photo is Joey, who I adopted in 2015 from Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue here in northern California. He's my 4th rescue golden, and a registered therapy dog.

I'm a 3rd-generation Californian, and live in the low mountains of the Sierra Nevada in the northern part of the state. When I'm not writing or gardening, I teach Communication Studies at a community college.

As a writer, I'm the author of a full-length nonfiction book, "Little Girl Lost: A True Story of Shattered Innocence & Murder," first published in 1992, and that's sold over 250,000 copies worldwide. It's now out of print, but people have said they can find used copies right on a number of sites, including here on Amazon.

I've also written for a number of national, regional, and local magazines and newspapers; currently, I write a newspaper column focused on life with dogs, that's syndicated in three newspapers in California. I've received several awards for my articles, including from New Millennium Writers, the Society of Professional Journalists, and Writer's Digest magazine.
