A delightful romp with hero being chased by aliens

This was a great romp with a sarcastic hero, a stubborn spaceship who doesn't want to answer to the name Buttercup, and evil aliens. The humor, action, and impossible dilemmas faced by a hero - who can hear aliens when no one else can - won my heart. I raced through the book and look forward to the rest of the series. I felt for our hero, from humiliation on a talk show to messing up his strategies to outwit aliens. He was all too human and stole a piece of my heart.

An Adventure From One Page to Another

Hometown Space Pirate was well worth the trip! With a unique spin on how humans and alien's interact and communicate this book is sure to keep you excited and ready to see what's next. And the first book taking place solely on Earth is a good touch! The main character is witty, funny, and relatable. And the cast of characters behind Ben is everything you could ask for from a nerdy scientist and kind of sarcastic space ship.

Hometown Space Pirate is a fun read with a cast of conflicted characters, including an alien ship with a contrary personality and the ability to think and make decisions. Scary, right? Especially when the bad aliens show up in an effort to make off with a mysterious (and huge) sea creature. The story is not just for space fans, although the science is way beyond me. The human characters are often confounded by events, as I would be, but they're brave enough to go along for the ride.

I loved this book! If you are the kind of sci-fi fan who enjoys getting into all the physics of space travel and and scientific theories about extraterrestrial life, well, there's none of that in this book. However, there is a collection of very entertaining, and somewhat off-beat characters - including a diverse group of aliens. Ben Roberts desperately wanted to assure the world that there really is other intelligent life in the universe. That was his first mistake. From the moment he makes his announcement, the life of this otherwise quiet, unassuming nurse quickly unravels into one of alien attacks, abductions, witty banter and murder. If you are looking for some light-hearted, comical, sci-fi fun, then I highly recommend this book!

How do you convince people that the "voices in my head" aren't a form of psychosis or the onset of dissociative identity disorder? How long will it take them to assume you need a straitjacket or a double handful of prescription medicine to keep you under control? Would you risk it to "save the earth" from an unseen threat - or would you simply try to ignore the voices and keep quiet?

Ben's 15 minutes of Fame Could be hazardous to his health

Ben Roberts hears Alien voices. He writes a book about his experiences and guest stars on a tv talk show to publicize it. The interview goes as one might expect and Ben finds himself an object of ridicule. Ben also finds he has the attention of representatives of two alien races who want to "recruit"him, with or without his consent. This book starts out fairly slowly, but the action does pick up leading to an epic space battle where Ben must risk everything on the hope that he understands the psychology of his enemies.

The title pretty much indicated that this would be a rather lightweight book. So that's fair enough and it was easy to read, at least as far as I got (30%). The premise seemed quite far-fetched and it was all a bit silly with the humour falling moderately flat most of the time (I think I laughed out loud once). Seemed as if it would appeal most to teenagers perhaps... certainly, the main character came across as being like-minded.

I prefer 'hard' Sci-Fi and gave up at 30%. Others may like it a lot more but I shall be deleting it as I found myself doing sudoku in preference to reading any further.

A bit slow (clunky) for the first 3 chapters but stick with it - gets funny and very readable. So much so that I have just bought the rest of the series.
Only real issue is with the editing - someone forgot to include spaces between words occasionally which is disconcerting and made me stop and decipher before continuing. Spell check shouldn't really be a problem for a digital version - just lazy editing.
