Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I am a retired teacher, mother of two adults, grandmother of three, and a former disciplinary Dean of Students. I have written three children's books and a few songs.

When and why did you start writing books?

I began writing books after my 4-year-old granddaughter participated in a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest with my daughter and some other family members. Her account of the event from a child's perspective was truly inspiring to both me and my daughter, and we decided to share her story. The positive response from customers encouraged us to proceed and we hoped that the information could benefit teachers and parents of young children in explaining what was happening in the world at that time.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

I didn't choose a career in book writing. I loved writing songs and only began authoring stories for my granddaughter. Positive feedback motivated me to continue.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

I am proud to say that my daughter and granddaughter are the co-authors of our books. Our books always feature Jaliyah as the main character. One of my favorite things about Jaliyah's book, "My Protest: Please Don't Erase Our History!" is how she expressed her love for learning about prominent Black people in school during Black History Month.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

The book titled "My Protest: Please Don't Erase Our History!" was particularly difficult for me to write, as it is widely known that the history of Black people is under attack and even facing censorship in some states. The governor of Florida recently announced plans to alter the teaching of Black history, which is concerning because my daughter Jaliyah loves learning about it. It is distressing to think that children may not be given accurate information about Black history.

Who is your favourite author and book?

At the moment, I own a number of books, but I wanted to show my appreciation to a new author who recently caught my attention. During an in-person book tour event, I came across a book named "Prepared 2 Die (Without a Dog)" authored by Frank Howard, whom I believe is a new and upcoming author.

What book are you reading right now?

I am currently reading a book called "Faith: My Walking Cane to Glory" by Delois Jackson.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

My primary source of inspiration is my seven-year-old granddaughter, Jaliyah.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy watching movies at home and attending virtual writing classes.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes, I am working on a memoir not intended for children.
