ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sloane Sabel is the pen name of a neurodivergent, queer, writer and witch of the woods. Drawing from her love of horror, she crafts morally ambiguous tales with high stakes and hot monsters. After all, there’s nothing quite like a harbinger of the apocalypse on their knees. Embrace your darkness.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I used to live in NYC. Besides reading, I used to play handball and spent a lot of time outside as a kid. Growing up I started getting into cooking and baking, emulating my ancestors in a way. Now I'm a kitchen witch in a little patch of woods who plays video games and watched horror movies in my spare time. There is occasionally cake.

When and why did you start writing books?

I've been writing and daydreaming up different lives since I can remember. It started with RL Stine. I was that kid at the library taking out the limit of books each time and just devouring stories. My mom would spend her time in the romance section while I'd read kid horror and explore the contents of the oldest dustiest shelves I could find.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

I got furloughed for ten months and didn't know how to handle it. I've always been ambitious and it was a huge blow to my ego. But then I noticed that being away from work did wonders to heal the chronic pain I'd been living with. The loss of pressure and stress started me on a healing journey that brought me back to my roots. Food and stories. I wrote every day, all day. Then a book was born.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

Hmmm, for this pen name I only have one book and honestly I really love this book and the characters within it. Shouldn't Have Come combines all the parts of horror and romance I love with a deeper thread of story I've always craved.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

Ha. Also Shouldn't Have Come. Switching genres is hard and I'm not used to giving aftercare for my stories, so there was a learning curve.

Who is your favourite author and book?

Bring Her Home by RN Barbosa. It is just a beautiful and heartbreaking tale about the family you have, the family you choose, and healing. Team Kaiden.

What book are you reading right now?

A few marketing books. I've also nabbed a graphic design one as I make my own covers.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

My life. I've always had a fantastic imagination and it's easy for me to daydream up alternate magical lives. But at the root, there is always a bit of me.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Playing with my cats, drinking tea, and reading tarot.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes! Working on an anthology for later this year. Fairy tale retellings of a sort. It's going to be epic.
