Tanya Ross was born and raised in San Diego County, her “happy place.” Although Southern California is a particular kind of paradise, she desires a world where everyone is kind, compassionate, and upbeat, which became one of the themes of her first novel, Rising Up. For thirty-two years she was an educator of English, history, AVID, and student leadership. She loves teaching and kids, her students a daily inspiration. Her exit from the educational arena allowed her to indulge her hopes, dreams, and goals in what she taught for so many years--writing. Her first novel, Rising Up, began her lifelong dream of writing meaningful novels for young adults. When she’s not creating new worlds, you can find her reading, and spending time with her husband and two kids. Discover more on her website: http://www.tanyarossauthor.com
Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.
I spent a wonderful thirty plus years teaching middle school. During that time, I also raised two children, one with special needs. My husband is a great partner and supporter, and probably my number one fan.
As far as hobbies and interests, I love to read, and I read different genres--just whatever strikes my fancy. I try to support Indie authors by giving priority to those.
I enjoy walking my dog, going to see movies, sewing, swimming, and of course, writing! I enjoy hanging out with friends and going to church.
When and why did you start writing books?
I had always wanted to write a book. Ever since I was in high school, I put it on my bucket list. Because I was fascinated with reading and because I was always a great writer, I thought it was a natural fit. However, I didn't start writing until I retired from my teaching career in 2019. I wanted to write books for young adults because that was the population I taught for so long.
What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?
I'm not sure I can call my writing a career. It is what I call a "serious hobby." I am very invested and determined to become successful with both inspiring people and earning royalties.
Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?
I have, so far at this writing, published two books in series. The second one, Facing Off, is my favorite because it has so many facets: mystery, adventure, romance, rebellion, the science of DNA...I could go on. It is also the book that has won four awards this past year, one most notably from Writer's Digest.
My favorite character is Xander Noble. He is the most fun to write because he is sarcastic, rebellious, and determined to exact revenge for how he was treated.
Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?
My first novel was hard because I had yet to believe in myself as a writer. I had a lot of self doubt that interfered with my progress. Also, I hadn't really found my voice as clearly as now. I was creating a story based on bits of inspiration I got from here and there, so it took me almost three years to write.
Who is your favourite author and book?
I have several favorites: Lois Lowery, The Giver - this was the first dystopian story I ever read; it is a masterpiece. I love Hugh Howey's Wool series. And I adore Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth.
What book are you reading right now?
I'm ready to start reading The Silent Patient.
Where do you get your inspiration for your books?
My inspiration comes from my family, music, books, and random tv series and even commercials!
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I think I answered this when I gave my hobbies and interests.
Do you have any new books in the works?
Of course! I am currently writing book 3 in the Tranquility Series.
