ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Xie Hong was born in Guangdong, China. He is a novelist and poet, writing in both Chinese and English. He is the author of sixteen books, including nine novels. He has received numerous awards, including the Shenzhen Youth Literature Award and the New Work Award of Guangdong Province. His work has been translated into English and has appeared in English magazines, such as World Literature Today, Renditions, LARB China Channel, Pathlight, and introduced to Western readers through The London Magazine, Literary Hub, and so on. Xie Hong started writing in English in 2014. His debut English novel Mao's Town was published in 2018. And his latest novel Who’s Chinese just out in January 2023.

Xie Hong graduated from East China Normal University in Shanghai, China, with a degree in economics, before spending time in New Zealand studying in English School of Waikato Institute of Technology. He migrated to New Zealand in 2008 and is currently based in Shenzhen, China.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Hello, I'm Xie Hong. I'm a novelist and poet and columnist, born in Guangdong, China, writing in both English and Chinese. My Chinese work has been translated into English and has appeared in World Literature Today, Renditions, LARB China Channel, and introduced to Western readers through The London Magazine, Literary Hub, and so on. My debut English novel Mao's Town was published in 2018. And my latest novel Who’s Chinese out in January 2023. I graduated from East China Normal University in Shanghai with an economics degree. Moving to New Zealand, I studied English at the Waikato Institute of Technology. Currently, I live in mainland China. My hobbies are music, movies, reading, cooking, walking, thinking.

When and why did you start writing books?

I started writing from junior high school because I was full of curiosity and imagination about the outside world.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

After I built up a certain economic foundation and a reputation in the writing, I decided to take writing as a career.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

Mao's Town is one of my favourite books.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

Mao's Town. It was my debut English novel.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Personal experiences and imagination and inspired by peoples' stories.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Listening to music, watching movies, reading books, cooking food, walking, dazing, and sometimes just watching clouds quietly...

Just doing polishing jobs right now.
