This is the story of an ordinary, albeit audacious, husband and wife team who, at the age of 43, gave up their respective banking careers to do some extensive travelling. It recounts how they then semi-retired into a three-day workweek arrangement that included up to three months leave-time per year. It was during those extended leaves that they continued to pursue their passion for travelling. These travels included a twelve-week tour of Europe, when the couple slept on side streets in the back of a station wagon. Thanks in large part to their resilience and ability to adapt to changing circumstances, they still managed to fully retire at fifty-five. Since then, their travels have taken them to many parts of the world, including Africa, China and Russia, where they spent twelve days, entirely on their own, in “the Bear’s Den.” The book describes how they achieved their seemingly impossible dream and partly delves into the financial aspects that made it possible. It is a fast-paced story that is rife with humorous anecdotes. It also includes vivid descriptions of the couple’s often jaw-dropping exploits and of the many obstacles they had to overcome throughout the various phases of their unconventional life together. At the very least, the book will allow the less-adventuresome reader to live vicariously through their daring and often mind-boggling experiences. Then again, it may inspire some to follow in their footsteps. If you enjoy reading about people who have done the impossible, then “On Life’s Journey” is a book for you.
