A sixteen-year-old boy chooses to leave the poor potato farm in Norway that he stands to inherit, hoping for a better life in America. In 1906, young Enok embarks on an adventure, which begins with a very tenuous ocean passage to New York. Broke and in debt, Enok struggles to find the better life. Initially, he finds work on a Connecticut tobacco farm, stoking coal on a ferry, driving a horse taxi, and breaking stone in a quarry.

Eventually, he discovers his career and finds his true love. World events take him out west, the deep south, and New England. He builds roads, bridges and railways, rides with cowboys, brings electricity to the south, begins a lumber company, and builds homes.

However, he remains torn between lover for Norway and a new family in America. In the end, he finds a solution.
