On 29 July 1938, Pan American World Airways’ flying boat dubbed “Hawaii Clipper” departed Apra Harbor, Territory of Guam, en route to Manila—about 1,400 nautical miles distant. On board were nine crewmembers, eleven passengers, mail, and cargo.

About midway, Hawaii Clipper ceased broadcasting its scheduled reports. Radio Manila tried assiduously to contact the Clipper to no avail. Four hours later, Pan American declared Hawaii Clipper missing and presumed down at sea. Extensive air and sea searches found nothing: no debris, no seat cushions, no body parts, and no oil slick.

To this day, the mystery of the disappearance of Hawaii Clipper remains unsolved.
