Born to young and poorly equipped parents in a failing marriage, Amber was denied healthy role models from the get-go.
Amber’s younger sister was born prematurely and was diagnosed with left-frontal hemiplegia, resulting in partial paralysis on her left side. Developing epilepsy as a teenager, she now walks with a noticeable limp and has limited hand functionality. Her seizures, which would occur unpredictably at night in their shared childhood bedroom, were terrifying to wake up to. Unfortunately, the issue wasn’t addressed in a timely fashion, and it worsened over time, progressing into grand mal seizures. She now relies on numerous medications, including antidepressants, and is unable to work or drive.
Her older brother contracted meningitis as a baby, but due to the lack of attention from doctors, he remained untreated. Consequently, he suffered a severe seizure that rendered him permanently deaf and mute.
In eighth grade, Amber developed anorexia. It was a poignant moment when she visited her dad, and he tearfully sat her on his lap, expressing his fear of losing her. Witnessing his vulnerability for the first time made her realize the severity of her condition. Soon after, she made the resolute decision to seek help and embark on a path to recovery. She relocated to the city where her dad lived, as it was home to a specialized women's hospital for eating disorders.
After high school, she went through a destructive phase of promiscuity, as she believed that attention from men was the only way to validate her self-worth. Engaging with numerous men, both online and in bars, she had unprotected one-night stands with all of them.
One of these young men became her boyfriend. Unfortunately, the relationship turned abusive over time. It started out as emotional and mental abuse, but one fateful night, he physically attacked her after a night of heavy drinking. Despite this traumatic incident, she foun
