"The Poisoned Garden" is set in the ancient city of Chamaris, which is ruled by a small group of wealthy and powerful men. At their head is Karkis, who is ageing and going blind. He has two sons by two wives. The elder, Ragul, is strong, athletic and a bully. The son of his second wife is called Peglar. He is quiet and prefers books to fighting. Karkis must choose one of them to inherit his power and his vast fortune, and he challenges them to compete to impress him.
Ragul does everything he can to get the better of Peglar, but he becomes increasingly frustrated as his half-brother avoids the traps he sets.
By chance Peglar meets Yalka, a poor girl from the slums. He's wary of her and doesn't understand her, but at the same time he's fascinated because she is like no one he has met before. They continue to meet in secret, and she turns his world upside down by showing him a side of life he never knew existed, so that he begins to question his upbringing and the privileged life he enjoys.
Meanwhile, in a desperate attempt to get ahead, Ragul uses his beautiful but cruel sister, Malina, in a sordid plot to disgrace Peglar. After luring Peglar into a private meeting, Malina accuses him of assaulting her. Ragul seizes on this as an opportunity to challenge Peglar to combat, and despite being innocent he must accept. There is no doubt that Ragul will win, but will that be the end of it?
