The Land of Opportunities

Some secrets pay well. This one could cost him the love of his life.Arriving in Miami as a young boy, Miguel Cordova grew up fast, transitioning from a life of significant wealth to battling poverty and prejudice while learning to fight back against bullies. In a high school classroom, an awe-inspiring Black teacher opened his eyes to the deeper truths behind slavery, freedom, capitalism, and the political forces that destroyed his beloved birthplace, lessons he would carry for the rest of his life.As a college student, he gets an unlikely job opportunity at Mon Chéri, a glamorous and alluring ladies-only resort in the Art Deco district of Miami Beach. The owner, Elizabeth Friedman, caters to an exclusive clientele of affluent women who are seeking intimate dating services with handsome, well-built gentlemen. While working in this type of setting, Miguel finds true love in Victoria, whose beauty and fierce intelligence match his own ambition. Before he can give Victoria the honesty she deserves, he must find peace with a turbulent past that has shaped every choice he’s made.Miguel’s plight is one of a family torn apart by the evils of communism and rebuilt by faith, education, and hard work, with an unshakable belief in God and the American Dream. Part family saga, part love story, part passionate exploration of the ideas that shaped a nation, The Land of Opportunities is a sweeping epic novel, inspired by the author’s own experience of escaping dreadful tyranny. For readers looking for more than one story in a novel, this is an uplifting coming-of-age journey woven with romance, political history, and a deep personal reckoning with what freedom costs and what it makes possible.
