A Very Heaven

Janey feels like a fledgling bird; she yearns to fly. Shy, imaginative, and depressed, she lives mostly in her daydreams until she meets Andrea. Against the background of tumultuous events from the murder of Martin Luther King to the music festival at Woodstock, Janey gets the adventurous life she dreamed about--though not in the ways she expected. Along the way she smokes a lot of pot, becomes a rebel at school, discovers that parents are people too, falls in love, and has her first heartbreak. The title comes from Wordsworth's ironic poem about the French Revolution: "Blest it was to be alive in that dawn, but to be young was very heaven."
