ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Laurie Woodford is the author of the romantic comedy, Anita Farleigh Unpacks, and the travel memoir, Unsettled. Before writing full-time, she taught college English in the U.S., China and South Korea and earned an MFA in creative writing from Queens University of Charlotte. Originally from upstate New York, she now lives in the outskirts of Austin, Texas with her amazing husband, Bruce, and wonder dog, Journey.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I'm an author and teacher who loves her family (dog included, of course), nature, and being physically active (I walk/jog 6 miles a day). I spent many years traveling extensively and now love being home, sitting on my patio drinking coffee with my husband each morning. I love writing and I'm also a long-time volunteer for hospice, work that is near and dear to my heart.

When and why did you start writing books?

I started writing short stories and personal essays back in the 1990's when I was in graduate school earning my master's degree in English, then continued to write throughout the years while teaching. I got serious about writing books in 2017 when I embarked on an MFA and have been writing books since.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

It's been a long journey of writing for decades that's finally morphed into a career. So I guess writing chose me.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

I love Anita and Oscar in my romcom, Anita Farleigh Unpacks. I love Anita's free spirit and vulnerability and Oscar's big heart and humor.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

All of my books are equally hard to write and stretch me as a writer. It's the nature of writing.

Who is your favourite author and book?

I love anything David Sedaris. He's the master of the personal essay.

What book are you reading right now?

Loot by Tania James

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

My inspiration comes from being a keen observer of life and the human condition.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spending time with family, playing with my dog, working with my pup in dog agility classes, walking/jogging, spending time with my dear hospice patients.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes! I'm currently working on a romantic comedy about a love weary death doula whose heart is wide-open for her patients, but closed off for romance then ends up on an accidental blind date with the quirky new guy in town who just might entice her to begin living her life to the fullest.
