Let’s join Evalena Davidson on the Oncology Ward of Denton Community Medical Hospital. At first glance, people think Evalena is Amish. When told she is part of a Brethren group they just shrug and say, “Same thing.”

As we join her, the German Baptist nurse can sense something is off. Her patient, Sophie Locke, a victim of multi-myeloma, is having a severe case of breakthrough pain. And if that isn’t bad enough, narcotics come up missing. The finger gets pointed at Evalena since she was the last person to use the medicine before the loss was discovered.

Soon after she married, and moved from Kansas, Evalena found sanctuary at the nearby state park. She found it a wonderful place to do her morning devotions. She has to get up early to make it work, but she often rides her horse, Shelby, to the nearby state park.

One morning a dead body shows up at Rainbow Falls.

Rumors soon race through the hospital that Danni Wagoner, another oncology ward nurse, and her husband Chris are responsible for counterfeit drugs recently found in the hospital pharmacy. Is it a set-up?

When Evalena finds another body at the Forest Hill covered bridge, her husband Brian reminds her there is a reason Old Order Anabaptists don’t use the law. He warns her not to get more involved. But it’s a matter of life or death, and she cannot turn her back on her friend, Danni.

Evalena keeps her eye on the rearview mirror to make sure she is not offending other members of her German Baptist community when she has to go against tradition. Since Evalena is not trained in criminal tracking, can she succeed before someone else dies? Or before losing her own life?
