According to a local Igbo legend, Mgbeke Mkpologwu was a woman who did great things that the men envied. She was a woman loved by some and hated by many but her fame spread to the corners of Igboland. To be identified with her meant you are no ordinary woman.

This is short story about how the fearlessness of a nanny goat with a legendary moniker managed to threaten the fragile peace between the members of an extended family, who lived together in a large African compound.

Nonye lived with her husband and their two children in Asaba, a city in southern Nigeria, until the pervasive economic downturn of the country meant only her and the children had to depart the city for the village to live in the same yard with the overbearing Mama Obiora.
Alone and with no financial support from her husband, she became acquainted with Mrs. Obi, a seemingly easygoing woman who worked hard to make her money. Mrs. introduced her to the kola nut trade, a lucrative but effortful business.

Nnedi hated their new home, but her brother settled well, quickly making friends with Kenna, the son of the wealthy Mrs. Obi, and they regularly came for visits with their pet dog.
Mama Obiora did not approve of Mrs. Obi and she advised Nonye to cut ties with her, to which Nonye refused.

Mgbeke Mkpologwu was in the thick of a series of events which led to disputes among the women; with an exchange of bad words, Mama Obiora went to the village council to seek justice which she got but never in the way she expected.
A Tale of Mgbeke Mkpologwu is a must-read for anyone looking for a heartwarming and entertaining book that they could enjoy at a sitting.
