ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I'm a naturalist, historian, and writer in Colorado Springs. A former Air Force officer, I was lead author of the NASA-published history The First Space Race: Launching the World’s First Satellites (2004). I wrote two well-reviewed books on unknown animals, Rumors of Existence (1995) and Shadows of Existence (2006). I've published one horror novel (The Dolmen, Wolfsinger, 2014), to superb reviews, and a fantasy, Raven’s Quest. The scientific thriller I'm looking to place, Apex Predator, won top awards in its category at two conferences. My latest book, Of Books and Beasts: A Cryptozoologist's Library (Hangar One, 2021), is a unique resource of 400 reviews of books in zoology, cryptozoology, and related sciences for the serious researcher. It won the 2022 General Nonfiction prize from the Colorado Authors League. I have broad interests, having written articles and papers on topics ranging from whale tracking to Martian soil. My Facebook page on the prehistoric armored fish Dunkleosteus terrelli, which features in Apex, is the top destination for “dunk” aficionados with over 2,000 likes. I also wrote about this species for Prehistoric Times magazine. I've appeared on two TV shows on mystery animals, and I blog on the latest science and technology news at Matt's Sci/Tech Blog. I'm a longtime member of National Association of Science Writers.
