ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I was raised by a pack of Wolves, at least that is what I tell folks who ask! The only problem with that is that I still want to howl during a full moon.

My business career was working with financial institutions and retailers to catch fraud and theft. It was a highly technical field that allowed little time for the creative side of my brain to run at full speed. My wife will tell you that I have an overactive imagination and I suspect that she is right.

Due to a disability I was forced to retire 3 years ago. I began to paint, create resin art, restore antique furniture, turn bowls on my lathe and, finally, write my first book. It began as my memoirs for my children and grandchildren. Somewhere early in my manuscript I changed course and wrote, “He Did What?”.

My wife and I met in high school and have been married for 43 years. We have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

After a great career in a highly technical environment I now enjoy unleashing the creative side of my brain. My favorite activities include creating resin art, painting, refurbishing antique furniture and turning wooden bowls on my lathe.

When and why did you start writing books?

I have authored several trade journal articles and started writing my memoirs 16 years ago. My bride frequently asked when I was going to start writing again. Her mother asked the same question and stroked my ego with, “Dale, your such a good writer!”. In January of 2020 I finally told my wife, “I want to write a book.”

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

Writing comes as part of a reinvention of Dale Austin. I had to take early retirement due to a worsening disability and knew immediately that my life had to take a different direction. Just sitting around all day would have driven me nuts! My title on a popular business social media network became Author instead of Engineer.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

My current book is non-fiction and I love each person mentioned. The two people that I enjoyed the most out of that group is my sisters. Three brilliant but goofy ladies.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

Writing such a personal book as I have done was gut wrenching at times. There were incidents and memories that still haunted me as I recalled them. Getting my manuscript onto paper was a difficult task simply because there were very few people who knew about the bombshell that I was preparing to drop.

Who is your favourite author and book?

Malcom Gladwell is currently my favorite author. Each of his books provide great insight and a look at our world from his unique perspective. My favorite of his books is “Blink”. It lays out a great examination of “gut feelings” and their importance in our lives.

What book are you reading right now?

Unmasking The Face by Paul Eckman and Wallace Frieson

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

My ideas and inspiration come from the world around me. People that I have met over the years and places that I have been to are all chock full of drama and humor.

Do you have any new books in the works?

My next book as been stretching myself quite a bit. I have just begun writing a love story! The first chapter has been started and it already makes my brain hurt.
