Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I'm a psychologist, retired professor, and frequent contributor to Psychology Today (PT). My PT blog -- same title as book -- has generated over 3 million page views to date. I'm currently working on my third book (about female psychopaths), but when I'm not writing I love to travel. I live in New Mexico

When and why did you start writing books?

I wrote my first book about a year ago after contributing for many years to Psychology Today By that time I had enough resource material about Machiavellian personalities ("master manipulators") to finish the book in about 3 months. I then wrote my second book, finishing in about five months. It's currently with the publisher.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

I have both the subject matter expertise and the writing skill to produce books, so why not?

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

My first book, Machiavellians: Gulling the Rubes (about master manipulators), is my favorite.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

The book I'm currently writing about female psychopaths is the most challenging for two reasons -- there's little research on female psychopathy compared to males, and it's dicey to brand someone as a psychopath based solely on personal observation or news accounts.

Who is your favourite author and book?

Collected short stories of Flannery O'Connor

What book are you reading right now?

I'm not reading. I'm writing.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Louis Pasteur said, "Chance favors the prepared mind." I observe, think, and then apply my training and experience to whatever interests me.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Traveling.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes -- a book about the psychology of female psychopaths.
