John Watson

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Originally from Scotland, I moved to Canada when I was 19 before finally settling in the Metro Atlanta area 15 years ago. When I'm not writing, I'm usually reading.

When and why did you start writing books?

I've been writing since I was a kid, but I didn't get serious about it until I was in my 50's.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

My wife gave me a nudge after reading the novel I wrote for NaNoWriMo a few years back. I submitted it to a publisher and was lucky enough to have it picked up.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

Karaoke Night, which was my first book, will always be special. My wife says that her favorite is Off The Grid, and she is my toughest critic. As far as characters go, the old couple in Be Kind, Rewind are special to me, since they are based on my parents.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

They are all difficult in their own way, but Slave to Blood proved to be a real chore. It's the one book of mine that I don't really care for, although I've had several readers tell me it's their favorite.

Who is your favourite author and book?

Imajica by Clive Barker.

What book are you reading right now?

I have several on the go at any given time.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

A lot of my inspiration comes from dreams, but it's also overheard snippets of conversation that get the juices flowing.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Reading or going dive bar hopping with my wife.

Do you have any new books in the works?

I have a short story collection called "The Sleeproom" in the final stages.
