ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is M. C. Clay and I write primarily in the YA Fantasy genre, but I also write a little in NA romance/fiction. I am from Tuscaloosa, AL where I currently reside. I attended the University of Alabama where I was awarded a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. I love to write as well as read. I am interested in almost all fiction genres. Some of my favorite authors are Leigh Bardugo, Victoria Aveyard, and Holly Black.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Obviously, I enjoy writing. But I also love reading in the YA fantasy genre, NA romance, mystery genres among others. I enjoy spending time with my family and having movie nights. I adore animals and enjoy spending time with my dogs.

When and why did you start writing books?

I started writing in high school in a creative writing setting and continued developing ideas and stories through college. I didn't start writing my first novel-length story until I graduated college in 2013.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

As I continued writing, my husband asked me what I was passionate about and I told him writing, which was something I hadn't necessarily advertised up until that point in 2019. He encouraged me to pursue it and so that's what I've done, publishing my first book in 2020 and 4 others through the end of 2021. So far, I cannot make it my full time career, as it isn't profitable enough yet for me to quit my day job. But I'm optimistic that I will be able to be a full-time author within the next 2 years.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

I am particularly fond of Sebastian 'Ash' Alsop in my Nokturn Rising series. He is a complex character with many layers that the reader discovers alongside Ash himself.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

This question is difficult as it depends on how I look at it. My first book was difficult in the sense that I was trying to perfect it constantly and never felt like I could get to a point that I felt the book was truly finished. But once I move passed that and cut the cord, so to speak, it didn't weigh on me so much. However, I am currently in the process of writing my most difficult book so far and it is for more technical reasons than emotional.

Who is your favourite author and book?

Leigh Bardugo is my favorite author and Six of Crows is my favorite book of hers (so far). Kaz Brekker is probably my all-time favorite character.

What book are you reading right now?

I am currently reading 3 different book. Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo, Fortune Favors the Cruel by Kel Carpenter, and The Chase by Elle Kennedy

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

I pull a lot of inspiration from dreams that seem to mashup different things I've read and watched. Sometimes I will just get a random idea and run with it. I have endless notes of scribbled ideas just waiting to be hashed out to see if I can make something of them. I can draw inspiration from nearly anything around me.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

When I'm not working my day job or writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter, I love playing with my dogs and traveling. I also enjoy baking and trying out new recipes.

Do you have any new books in the works?

I have A LOT of new books coming. The fifth installment of Nokturn Rising is nearly through the first draft stage. I am also working on the second book in the Eyes of Days series. There are two other books I am working on that are the first in their series and I could honestly go on for a while on all of the projects I have in the works. I have book release plans dating through at least 2025 as of right now.
