ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Suzanne Simonetti is an award-winning novelist who grew up in the New York suburbs just outside of the city. After earning a BS in marketing, she spent several years writing press releases, until she left her corporate job to focus on her passion for crafting fiction. She lives on Cape May Harbor with her husband. When not on her paddle board or yoga mat, she can be found at the beach trailing the shoreline for seashells, scribbling in her notebook, and channeling dolphins for meaningful conversation. The Sound of Wings is her first book.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

I love to food and I enjoy cooking. When I get stuck on the page, I throw on an apron and start chopping vegetables. I also enjoy exercise, yoga, and paddle boarding.

When and why did you start writing books?

I was always a big reader. I began to write over ten years ago. I had finished a book and a little voice said to me, "I can do this." So I began drafting my first manuscript.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

My mentor and friend, Caroline Leavitt, told me years ago that I was "the real thing." She told me I had the talent and drive to make it as a writer. Her belief in me gave me the will to finish two manuscripts.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

I love all three of the protagonists in The Sound of Wings. I am most like Krystal and since the story idea came to me through her, she is my favorite.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

My debut, The Sound of Wings, took a tremendous amount of research. I spent months and months getting certain scenes just right.

Who is your favourite author and book?

It is difficult to pick one favorite author. Among my favorites are Karen White, Anna Quindlen, Kristin Hannah, Elin Hilderbrand.

What book are you reading right now?

I am reading Geographies of the Heart by Caitlin Hamilton Summie.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Cape May Island is filled with interesting people and places. Lots of talented chefs, artisans, potters, painters, musicians, performers, and the USCG base just around the corner from my house. There is no shortage of inspiration here.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Reading!!! I wish I had more time to read. It is one of my favorite things to do. Writers are readers first.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes, I do! I am working on a sequel to The Sound of Wings. It takes place over ten years later. We will get to see Jocelyn's little boy Billy as a teenager and catch up with The Axelrods now that Abe has retired. Also, Krystal has expanded her business operations! The women have started a book club with lots of interesting characters, including a surfer and a curmudgeon older lady who owns and operates a local Bed & Breakfast called The Osprey of Mey.
