The central character, Betsy Roberts, was
kidnapped as a young teenage girl, then was caught up in the evil,
murderous activities of the notorious Harpe brothers, Micajah and
Wiley Harpe who became known as “The Terrible Harpes”. Gradually
in order to survive, Betsy later became a perpetrator, unwillingly at
first, but later complicit in their heinous crimes, even murdering
some of their victims herself. The novel describes how she survived
this truly appalling experience as part of the Harpe “family”.








Part
2 of the book describes how she escaped with her young son Joshua,
from her home in Lexington, Kentucky after murdering her husband.
Betsy then embarked on a long, treacherous journey full of amazing
exploits, new characters, and places in western America. Arriving in
New York City she created a successful business and family dynasty in
this new burgeoning, exciting city. This she did through her
