Tell us a little bit about yourself, your hobbies and interests.

Hi, I’m Michelle M. Pillow, a prolific author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. When I’m not writing, I love spending time with my family and my cat/manager, Bunny, who often keeps me company during my writing sessions. I’m also a fan of studying social anthropology, which helps me create rich, immersive worlds. My interests include watching movies, exploring new places, talking about art with my daughter, and brainstorming new story ideas with my husband, John, and my best friend, author Mandy M. Roth.

When and why did you start writing books?

I’ve been fascinated with storytelling from a young age, initially capturing moments with my camera and later transforming those moments into words. I officially started writing books over two decades ago, driven by my passion for creating intricate, magical worlds and exploring human emotions through a supernatural lens. Writing became an outlet for my creativity and a way to share my imaginative worlds with others.

What made you decide to tackle writing as a career?

The turning point came when I realized that writing was not just a hobby but a true passion. I was constantly thinking about new stories and characters, and the urge to write became impossible to ignore. The positive feedback from early readers and the joy of seeing my stories come to life on the page motivated me to pursue writing as a full-time career. It’s been a rewarding journey, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Which one of your books or characters is your favourite?

That’s a tough question because I love all my characters for different reasons. However, Tamara from my urban fantasy Merely Mortal holds a special place in my heart. Her journey of self-discovery and the challenges she faces as a mortal in a powerful supernatural family make her story particularly compelling. Tamara’s strength, resilience, and growth throughout the book are aspects that I think many readers will find relatable and inspiring.

Which one of your books was the hardest to write and stretched you the most as a writer?

Merely Mortal was definitely one of the most challenging books to write. Balancing the supernatural elements with Tamara’s mortal experiences required careful handling to ensure the story felt authentic and engaging. Developing Tamara’s character and the dynamics within her powerful supernatural family stretched me as a writer, pushing me to explore deeper emotional and psychological layers. On top of that, I was trying a new writing style. This is my first first-person POV book after decades of writing in the third person.

Who is your favourite author and book?

I have many favorite authors, but if I had to choose, I’d say Anne Rice has been a significant influence on my work. Her ability to blend romance, fantasy, and supernatural elements seamlessly is something I admire. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice made me want to learn more about history as a High Schooler. Travels with Charley by Steinbeck is also a favorite. It's a travelogue journeying through America to meet different types of people.

What book are you reading right now?

I’m currently reading a mix of genres, including some literary fiction and women’s fiction, as well as works by author friends. I believe that reading widely helps to broaden my perspective and inspire new ideas. Supporting fellow authors and exploring different styles and narratives is always a rewarding experience. I'm about to start Mandy M. Roth's Prince with a Chance of Darkness just as soon as I can get her to give it to me early. It's part of her Grimm Cove series which I highly recommend.

Where do you get your inspiration for your books?

Inspiration often comes from unexpected places. Personal experiences, travels, and observations of the world around me are constant sources of ideas. Movies, art, and nature also play a significant role in sparking new story concepts.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

When I’m not writing, I love spending time with my family and pets. Watching movies, traveling, and exploring new places are some of my favorite activities. I also enjoy being a production assistant on my husband's film projects, which gives me a chance to step away from writing and engage in a different creative process. Relaxing with a good book and a cup of coffee in one of my special ceramic mugs is another way I like to unwind.

Do you have any new books in the works?

Yes, I’m always working on new projects. Currently, I’m excited about the next installment in the series following Merely Mortal called Mostly Shattered. The new book will delve deeper into the supernatural world and Tamara’s continuing journey. I can’t wait to share more of her story and the adventures that lie ahead with my readers. Stay tuned for updates!
